Good Grief! Skunks!

We are having a terrible problem with skunks! My neighbors were out this evening, shooting at 2 skunks with a shotgun- luckily they got them without them spraying. I wonder how they did that.

My husband wants to set a trap, but I have said no to this; What if he caught a skunk instead of an armadillo, and the darned thing sprayed in the garden and everything smelled horrible for days? What if it sprayed him? I am not going to wash him with tomato juice. He is on his own.....

I have to go out on the back deck to turn the light on when the dogs want to go out, because they are so spoiled that they won't go out in the dark. I am always worried that a skunk is going to be out there, eating the dogs food or something. Probably just waiting to spray me....

Do skunks go dormant in Winter, or are they here all year?

I don't like the possums, but I hate the skunks!

The city sets live traps here, I have no idea what they do with them as we have so much public parkland around here. I do know they are very destructive in the garden/lawns, digging for grubs.

You really do not want to get sprayed by one .. take care.

Umm, I think skunks are active year round. Don't leave dog food outside since it will attract a number of animals including grackles! I live in a subdivision, but my yard backs up to a large pasture/brushy area. I have 4 pet chickens. Several weeks ago, one was taken by a bobcat. I saw it leaping back over the fence with Lucy in its mouth-we were on the patio when it happened. Now our 16-year-old small dog is missing. I am concerned that the bobcat got her! Good luck with your skunk problem!
Blessings,
Lorilee

We caught a skunk in the armadillo trap once. We threw a blanket over it and the skunk never sprayed when DH loaded it in the golf cart and took it across the highway for dispatch.

I don't mind the other varmits, but I live in FEAR of skunks. When I see one I start pleading/praying 'please don't spray, please don't spray.' I hope you can run them off without getting stinky (yukky stinky skunks). I had to start bringing the cat and dog food inside because of visiting cats and other things (no skunks-YET)
