So, in advance of all that, I was out trying to take care of some of my new tender foliage that I am so proud of, and I found this.
Tucked in among many weedy things is this little clump of Dianthus. They have been here for at least 3 years, and they just flourish. I will tend to this area this weekend, after the weather clears.
It is here. The cold, the wind, the rain. Yuk.
But I do have this patch of dianthus. It doesn't take much for me.

I hope the cold blows through quickly. The same storm came through here yesterday morning and it blew away very fast. I love your little Dianthus....it is there to prove to you that spring is coming.

Normally, we would be in full swing. We do have roses blooming with abandon, and the iris up and about to bloom, I think. This is a weird year, weather wise.
This is just a regular late storm, with cold temps, winds and cold rain. We already had hail this a.m., I hope that is done.
Linda, this dianthus has been beautiful all winter, even when it was freezing outside. I didn't know dianthus was so hardy! I had forgotten about it, so it was really pleasurable to see it all perky and blooming.
I know just what you mean - no matter how blustery and unpleasant, a small patch of flowers can still make your day in the garden!
There ought to be a law against it Janie. LOL! How terrible to tease us with all this nice weather and then slap us again. Just not right. Luckily it will not last much longer.
What? Freeze! We're going to get rain. What's happening over there in Texas? Somebody left a door open again?
Just when I thought it was safe to plant something out, but didn't. De ja vu all over again.
Today is the first day of spring...did they forget to send the memo to the weather!

The dianthus are so pretty. I'm starting some this year, hope they do as well as yours. I never realized that Texas had so much cold, I always imagined it to be warm almost year round. Hopefully it warms up soon.
We are in the same situation here in Italy - just weird weather. There is still snow on the hilltops after last week's freak arrival. Treasure that Dianthus!

Dianthus is blooming? Already? Aah, I forgot it's Texas! Freezing? Are you sure, it's Texas?!
Janie, I love the way those dianthus will just keep coming back and looking lovely without much in the way of effort on my part. Last year, I included some as part of a collection of annuals in a big pot on the deck, and I just noticed that the dianthus have put up new growth this year. Hope your cold weather is over soon and you can enjoy a well-deserved spring. -Jean

We got the little cold front too....2 inches of sleet and snow. It all melted off yesterday. Spring is always a crap shoot in the Ozarks.
I hope the cold is gone now and you're busy getting your hands and feet dirty. Happy Spring Gardening!
