Starting to whine.....

It is raining at my house. It has been raining since midnight, and will continue to rain all day, all night tonight, and most of tomorrow. Ordinarily, I would not mind the rain, but it is also February, and that means it is also COLD! I hate cold! My feet hurt, they are so cold.....

It seems it is either Feast or Famine for us. This past summer, we were without rain for about 5 months, maybe longer. Crops died in the fields, the cattle were being fed hay brought in from North Texas. We had green grass in our yard, but we have St. Augustine, and it can go awhile without rain. We were running sprinklers every day for awhile, every other day at least, but only in the vegetable garden or the flowerbeds; never the grass. It was a terrible drought.

.

It finally started to rain around the first of September. I know we were happy! We had nice rain, an abundance of rain. Plenty of rain, lots and lots of rain! The ground is soaked, the farmers are ready to plant, but the fields are so wet they can't get in them! We are not complaining, because I would almost bet that that is what caused the drought....

However.....it is raining again. This is our little river, the Lavaca. Normally, it is a small river, peaceful, nice to tube, or canoe on. Good fishing in this river, good place for a picnic.

It is about 4 times it's normal size now, out of it's banks and about to cut off traffic. We have seen it where the road was completely covered over, and the water was running pretty fast. I swear, catfish were swimming across the road!

As soon as it warms up a little, the banks of this swollen river will be covered up with people with fishing poles.

These last two pictures were taken from the bridge.

I just want my feet to warm up.

Not complaining, tho.

It is the same here, Janie. Cold and wet, plus the wind making it feel in the single digits. I am so over it!

I should have added "At least it isn't snowing", but that might have invited snow. I feel for those people who are snowed in!

Hurry, Spring! Hurry!!

I'm feeling a bit whiny today, myself. Don't want to whine too loud. We know how bad it can get without the rain. But, couldn't we have a few days without it?

I was going to offer trading our snow for rain, but decided against it. Too much of either is no good! I think we're all ready for spring - at least I am!

I'm whining. And I won't apologize for it either. It should be in the 50s during the day. Instead, we're hovering around 40. The wind, like Jim said, was terrible yesterday. I was wearing two pairs of thermals under my jeans and could still feel the chill. I really hope this does pass. I expect spring to be slow in breaking this year. And wet.

Maybe we just need to invest in wool socks.

Whine on girl. LOL! It does seem that weather comes in extremes anymore rather than everyday weather. This has turned out to be a nasty February here in the north and east. You whine about the rain and I will whine about the snow. ;-)

Hi Janie,

I suffer from cold feet too! Even in the summer, when I do not mind it though. Your river is huge! I guess it is either feast or famine isn't it?

Hi janie, I sure understand how your feeling We have wood floors and on the cold winter days, it gets COOOLLD. Plus it seems lately if we're not getting snowed it, its raining all day and threatening to freeze over at night. Bring on Spring!

Oh, I understand entirely. Though I am happy to say we have seen glimpses of the sun for the past two days. Before that though, it seemed our rains would never stop either! At least spring will be here soon, and the garden does look much better for all the rain.

Janie, as a farmer and cattle raiser, we just shuddered when we saw pictures and heard about your drought. We try to never complain (too much) about the wet!

Like Tom, we are running between 10 and 20 degrees colder than normal.

Be very interesting to see what spring brings us!

We have one of those small oil-filled heaters that I sometimes rest my feet on....with an afghan over all. Cold feet are a very bad thing.

SNOW is predicted here, possibly, tomorrow and a low of 27 degrees.

I have the warm fuzzies, reading my new book. Thanks, Janie.

Thanks for letting me know I am not alone in this condition. Whine, whine, whine! I feel better!

You are welcome for the book Nell. I got a couple of lazy-Susan turning thingies today, to make some pedestals to turn my coil pots on as I work on them. If I can get the kitchen warmed up, I may work on a pot or two. Or several, depending on how long it rains.

We have had 4" of rain TODAY! Whine....

Two words for cold feet. Sheepskin slippers. Best 60 bucks I ever spent on my feet.
I hope things don't overflood, Janie. I'm worried about what will happen in the DC/Maryland area when all that snow melts in a few weeks.

Hi, Janie ~ I hear you...we had such a drought that it is hard to complain about the rain. If the sun would just peek out a little it would be nice. Stay warm..:)

I will see it when I believe it.
I don't believe we will have snow. It is also predicted to get colder. DH re-wrapped the outdoor faucets.

I hope you don't end up with snow...since it's snowing in so many areas of TX right now;-/ It can be difficult no matter what the weather, when we get 'too much of the same'...(unless of course, it's pleasantly sunny, in the '70's with a light breeze). Too much heat too much rain (flooding) and/or too much snow wreak havoc not just on nature but also on our moods and outlooks. I sure hope your rain will stop and any flooding or threats of flooding will cease, as well as other problems that go along with it. Spring is really just days away--at least that's what people keep telling me;-)

It's hard not to complain about the weather sometimes. We're having lots and lots of cold rain here too. Hopefully the rain will stop so the farmers can get their fields planted, it sounds like it's been a very hard year for them.

I'm right there with ya. Today, however, they are forecasting a rare snow event in Birmingham. Time will tell. It's been years since I have seen snow......

debsgarden said...

Hi Janie, we had a terrible drought a couple years ago, and I also said i would never complain about rain again, too. Last year and this year so far have been very wet. I am glad the rivers and lakes have filled up again, but we don't need a flood! Your little river is beautiful. I hope the rain will return to normal levels, enough for plants to prosper and with plenty of sunshine for people to enjoy.

And thanks, Janie for visiting my blog and commenting on our rare snow. If it weren't snowing today, it would have been more rain!

It's hard when it's one extreme or the other. Neither is good. The power of too much water and the destruction it can cause. And the extreme drought is horrible too. I hope your toes warm up and the sun shines soon, but not for too long.

Dear Janie, It really does seem that everything comes in extremes. First, as you say, drought, and now torrential rain. The pictures of your nearby stream look alarming. I do hope that your hose and garden are safe from flooding.

Thank you so much for picking my latest posting. It was a kind thought and much appreciated and enabled me to find you.

Carol said...

Oh Dear... it does look a bit wet there. I love how you are careful not to complain or wish for something else or not welcome rain for there could be a drought... always good to see the other side of things and you do! Kudos for that! Hope it dries out soon and folks can go fishing! ;>))

I'd put my wife's feet up against yours any day. Anything to keep her from sticking them against me at night.

I am feeling for you, that's for sure! We normally get tons of rain around vancouver but this winter has been reasonably warm. Not enough snow for the Olympics, though,

Hi Janie.
It does seem that the weather just happens in extremes anymore. The water table after your drought should be okay now with all this rain ;-)
Love to fish but hate to get catfish from the hooks. They always sting me.LOL! Hope your weather get backs to a more normal rhythm soon.

Hi Janie~~ Sorry I've been away so long. I'm sending warm thoughts to your feet. Your local river is a telltale sign of the rain, isn't it?
I bet you'll have a gorgeous landscape this summer.

Hi Janie-One of these days the soil will warm and dry and we will run our fingers through it.... and quickly go to the hose and wash our hands! I look out at snow. Is it just me or has this been the longest winter?

Hope it's warmed up a bit by now Janie. Spring can't be far off ...

Boy, do I sympathize with your whining! It actually made me feel better, Janie. ;) I'm so ready for winter to be over -- and the weather man says we might be in for our third snow (unheard of here) this weekend. Boo, hiss!

Hey Janie, loved your comment on the political post. Seems a lot of times the people in power let it go to their heads...LOL

If you notice, most times when I'm talking politics, I let the goats do the talking... so when they say "Our Man" they are talking about my husband. ha ha

We've had much rain and three snows this winter... I'm ready for spring...
