The Hoop House....

We are recycling people. So much of what we do starts with parts and pieces of other things.

The hoop house is no exception.

My Husband built this marvelous hoop house for me. Unfortunatly, I can't get a better picture of it for you, as we have disassembled it now, and given it to a friend to use at her house. We needed the room for the expansion of the SHOP (more about that later)....
This hoop house started very modestly as two (2) junked trampolines. Bobby took them apart, and cut the legs off each section. He put two arcs together to form a main rib of the house.

The two trampolines provided 4 main ribs. We used inexpensive PVC that is used for sprinkler systems for the additional ribs. The whole thing is held together with long (21') pipe that is actually the top rail of a chain link fence. They come in various lengths. Bolt it all together with carriage bolts, and use lengths of treated wood at the bottom. Also, we used some pieces of rebar to secure the bottom of the hoop and keep it from blowing away. I think he drilled holes in the trampoline frame, then hammered the rebar through at an angle and into the ground.

The hoop house is 22'L x 18'W x 11' in height.

A purchased shade cloth for summer, or greenhouse grade plastic in winter, this hoop house is wonderful for propagation or storing plants. It saved many plants from the summer sun, and from the harm of freezing in winter.

AND..... it kept those trampolines out of the landfill, and it was cheap to do.

Cheap can be real good.

I found an old trampoline on the side of the road here a few weeks back. I was heading home for lunch. I decided to pick it up on my way back to work. It was gone, less then 30 minutes later. Oh well, someone else had a good idea for it too.

I'll just use old pvc pipe and plastic again this year for my hoophouse. I love playing in the dirt when it's freezing out.

I like the green background. Looks familiar. :)

Janie,
Brilliant! You are a genuis! I am going to take apart our trampoline next summer, it has seen its days. Now I don't have to trash it. I love re-purposing and this is the best idea I have seen for using a trampoline. I already stole the side-netting for my garden and it was a great hail defector.
I finally did a post about where I am from. Thanks for starting the ball rolling.
C/ya later Janie!

This is perfect!! My friend was telling me of something she saw made out of tramplines and how they could be reused. I just gave my neighbors mine but when it falls apart I plan to try something like this. You guys are so creative and it looks great! Especially helpful in Texas for the shade and keeping it out of the landfill is one of the best features of it.

What a clever way to recycle an old trampoline! ;)

Hi Janie,

What a great idea! You are fortunate that your husband is so handy. Our trampoline blew away during a storm and landed 4 houses away. Unfortunately, it was not salvageable.

This is really cool! Can't wait to see your next one. I am still "pondering" extending the winter harvest. This idea I have to store. Hmmm, agave ... tequila? Enjoyed reading both your posts. Office supplies? That's great.

Wow!!! THis is great. I can't believe he built this from all these old found materials. It looks excellent too! You'll get so much use out of that thing. What a great gift!

Well you said it, cheap can be good! I studied your hoop house quite closely. I have been thinking of making one myself but right now I don't have the spot to put it. I am also reminded by the hubs that I don't have the space to put any more plants into the ground. Bah!

Very nice, creatively done. I would never knew that they were trampoline.

Aren't you going to miss that hoophouse...........

I would be looking for another site and maybe a smaller version.

I had one once made from pvc pipe...until a tornado ruined it.

Still have plans for using some old storm windows.

What great hoophouse and I love that you recycled the trampolines for it.

Good work! I'm always amazed at the gardeners who yearn for an expensive greenhouse that looks swell while their plants die from exposure.

Mama used to buy plants from a lady who had tender plants everywhere, in the spring. I asked how she kept so many plants over the winter, and Mama said, "Why in her greenhouses, of course." I looked for glasshouses and saw none. Mama pointed out the little chicken-coop structures covered with bits and scraps of plastic. Ingenuity will find a way. Creativity will make it attractive.

Good on you, my neighbor took their trampoline apart and put them on the outside for two weeks, I thought they didn't want them anymore, so I took them home and build doghouse, when I finished, my neighbor came to me and told me he still wanted them, what the..., It is A bad day.
